About Ampeire Laureen

In the quiet, green hills of Nyamatsinda, a small village nestled in Rushaga, Kisoro District in southwestern Uganda, lives a bright-eyed, spirited 7-year-old girl named Ampeire Laureen, lovingly called Kantorana by those closest to her.

Laureen is a beam of sunshine in her community. She is currently enrolled in the Middle Class at Heart 2 Heart Nursery School, a local school established to bring education closer to rural children like her. Every morning, she walks to school with her little feet full of determination, her eyes full of wonder, and her heart full of hope.

Despite growing up in a family that survives on subsistence farming, Laureen’s joy is boundless. Her parents, Aspolo and Florence, work hard in the fields each day, planting and harvesting just enough to feed their children and keep them clothed. They are proud peasants, hardworking and loving, but with minimal means. Even with their dedication, providing a consistent education for Laureen is a struggle.

But Laureen dreams beyond the borders of her village. When she plays with her friends, she pretends to be a nurse, gently caring for “patients” with twigs and leaves, wrapping imaginary bandages with a smile that could light up the darkest day. She already has the heart of a healer.

She also enjoys digging in the garden — not just as a chore, but with curiosity and enthusiasm. Whether helping her parents in the fields or reading aloud in class, she gives her all every day.

Laureen has one brother, Ismail, who both dream of a better future, where education opens doors and possibilities for them that their parents never had. But dreams like these need someone to believe in them.
